Solo Channels Larry Alcala

Sunday, August 29, 2010
As a kid, I remember reading "Slice of Life" and thinking how interesting Larry Alcala's style was. Instead of several panels, he incorporated them into one panel that showed multiple things happening at once. It's no wonder he is a legend. Talent like his does not go unnoticed.

To honor Mr. Alcala's genius, Solo has created the Pinoy Cartoonist Memorabilia by Larry Alcala collection. Aside from tops and dresses, the collection also includes bags, notebooks and mugs.

My favorite item from the entire collection is this ladies' dress.

I've always been partial to jeans and t-shirts so a dress has to be very special to catch my eye. I love the contrast of violet on white on this dress. It's attention-catching but not overly so. It's the kind of outfit that would look good on anyone.

Speaking of which, Solo is also launching its' Online Model Search. You could follow in the footsteps of last year's winners Jaggy Tallada and Jhonna Flor. All you have to do is submit a picture of yourself wearing something from the collection. You can also enhance your photograph using graphic elements provided on the website. Click on the link above for more details.

You can also view Solo's Facebook and Twitter sites to learn more about the collection and the model search.

The Future According to Red Fox

Wednesday, August 4, 2010
I think it came from the future. Well, not really. It may as well have, though.

The Red Fox Vengence Evo G502 boasts of AMD Phenom II X4 945 (3.0 GHz, 6 MB L3 Cache) processor, AMD 790G chipset, 4 GB (DDR3 1333 MHz) memory and 1 TB (SATA) hard drive. To the ordinary (and/or tech novice) consumer, its specs may seem like just a jumble of numbers and letters. I’m not a tech expert either, but even I know that a 4 GB memory and 1 TB hard drive is something to whistle about. It promises a lot of speed and it’s going to be a long, long time before you’ll have to delete anything on your computer. Add the sleek red and black design, and I’m half expecting the computer to turn into a robot and shout, “Autobots, transform!”

A little less Transformers-looking is the Wizbook W1020i.

It doesn’t sacrifice anything in terms of features, though. It has an Intel® Atom™ processor, 160 GB hard drive, 4-in-1 card reader, a built-in camera, and is 3G ready and Bluetooth-capable. See, even in this image-driven world, not everything has to be flashy to be indispensable.

The Red Fox PC that I’ve got my eye on, though, is a hybrid: the eVolve.

I guess you can say it’s half-PC and half-TV. The CPU is already built into the monitor, which makes this perfect for those who live in apartments where space is hard to come by. There’s even a remote control you can use to switch from PC mode to TV mode, and vice versa.

Evolve isn’t Red Fox’s only wave-of-the-future product. The WizLib is an e-book reader that has a Wi-fi option so you can connect to the internet. The Interactive Whiteboard, on the other hand, is the kind of product that every big (or even medium-sized) business should have. As the name suggests, it is a combination of a white board and a projector. It allows you to control the computer through the board itself via your finger or digital pen. There is even an application that allows you to save what is written on the board directly onto your computer. And finally, there’s the Boombox. It’s a media player that can convert cassettes and audio CDs into mp3s. I’m not sure how it does this, but color me curious. The 1 GB version of the Boombox can hold up to 280 songs.

If you want to win a Boombox for yourself, join
Red Fox’s blog contest. Click the link for more details.

The Super (and only) ONE

Wednesday, July 28, 2010
It was only supposed to be one "friendly" date. When he first asked me out, I had told him I would think about it. At the time, we were very good friends, but I wasn't sure if it could be something more. At the insistence of two of my girl friends, I decided to give him a shot.

Last week, we celebrated our 1st anniversary as a couple. The video is just a very small look into our adventures so far, but it gives a great preview of what we're like as a couple. And he's my super ONE in one other way, too. He's my 1st boyfriend.

"Stolen" [Dashboard Confessional]

We watch the season pull up its own stakes
And catch the last weekend of the last week
Before the gold and the glimmer have been replaced,
Another sun soaked season fades away

You have stolen my heart

Invitation only, grand farewells
Crash the best one, of the best ones
Clear liquor and cloudy eyed, too early to say goodnight

You have stolen my heart

And from the ballroom floor we are in celebration
One good stretch before our hibernation
Our dreams assured and we all, will sleep well

You have stolen
You have stolen my heart

I watch you spin around in your highest heels
You are the best one, of the best ones
We all look like we feel

You have stolen my
You have stolen my heart

Mooon Cafe

Monday, January 25, 2010
*author's note: I intend to edit this piece for use in my writing portfolio for BusinessWorld. - MB

Restaurant: Mooon Cafe
Location: 3/F The Annex SM City North Edsa
Quezon City

It was only by chance that Sam and I ended up here for lunch. After wandering around, we found ourselves in front of this Mexican cantina-inspired restaurant. The blurbs in the menu were deliciously descriptive and enticed us to give this place a try.

I ordered the Chicken Mozarella Melt (pictured above; P179, garlic rice included). The taste reminded me of beef, which I found a little bit odd. Near the end of the meal, Sam tasted it and said that the marinade used was soy sauce and calamansi, which was probably why it reminded him of food cooked during the barangay fiesta at his place (and why it made me think of beef steak). The chicken was tender and tasty, but I think the price is a tad steep.

Sam ordered the Mooon Steak (pictured above; P169, garlic rice included). He seemed to like it enough, but I found it somewhat bland.

Overall, the price is probably not worth it. The food was only average and it seemed that we were paying mostly for the ambiance.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Fail

I'm a big fan of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf's Moroccan Mint Tea Latte, so I was psyched about Belle Du Jour's CBTL coupons. Sam and I decided to use the "Buy One, Take One" Tea Latte offer. To our disappointment, Moroccan Mint was unavailable. At first, we ordered one Matcha Green Tea Latte and One Double Vanilla Tea Latte. At the last minute, we changed the order to two Double Vanilla Tea Lattes. The girl at the counter was able to get our orders right. Sadly, the barista wasn't as alert. And even worse, we didn't notice that she got our orders wrong until we arrived back at the office.

Between the Lines: "Women's Health" magazines

Friday, January 15, 2010

The most popular New Year's resolution is "to lose weight." For me, it's get healthier. This can be a challenge, though, since I never feel like I have the time to exercise, and eating healthy isn't as feasible as I would like. Enter Women's Health magazine.
It's packed with health facts and figures, as well as various articles meant to make becoming healthier as easy as possible. The highlight of the January-February 2010 edition would probably be the "We Dare You" article, which is the ultimate 2010 fitness plan. There's already a cardio plan provided, as well as various exercises grouped according to the muscles that get worked and what it improves (strength, flexibility, agility, and balance).
Other articles I found interesting are: "Kick Your Kitchen Skills Up a Notch" (simplifies 5 important cooking skills: roasting, broiling, boiling, sauteing, and braising); "Inside a Healthy Pantry" (lists healthy ingredients to stock up on); "Survival Crib Sheet" (think "Worst-Case Scenario Survival Guide"); and "Get Him to Groom Like Beckham" (tips on how to get your significant other to be more conscious of his looks and personal hygiene).

Between the Lines: "45 Home-Based Business Ideas"

*author's note: I intend to edit this piece for use in my writing portfolio for BusinessWorld. - MB

During these still shaky economic times, it never hurts to have a sideline business. But how do you decide what kind of business to set up? For some people, lack of experience or even just a general idea of what they're going to do is enough of a deterrent to their dreams of having their own business.
Well, Entrepreneur's book will change all that. "45 Home-Based Business Ideas" presents different home business ideas for you to consider, ranging from home and craft items like stuffed toys and aromatherapy candles to food items like siomai, siopao, and even Spanish sardines. And the best part of it is, step-by-step instructions are provided for each item. Also included are the list of materials you will need, the estimated start-up capital, and what would be a fair price for your items. The last one is a very important detail for me since I'm never quite sure how to compute for a competitive market price.

Between the Lines: "Akibakada" and "Go Beerkada: The Rise of the Jhologs"

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

For the past ten years, readers of the Philippine Star were entertained by the exploits of one barkada in the aptly-titled comic strip "Beerkada." "Akibakada" is the 9th Beerkada book by Lyndon Gregorio.

For the benefit of those who aren't familiar with the characters, below is a rundown of the main characters in the series:
Glen: the quintessential boy next door
Chompy (real name: Andrea): nicknamed as such because of her penchant for biting Glen; Glen's girlfriend; "newest" addition to the group
Boopey: law student; taray queen (occasionally, anyway)
Alan: Boopey's boyfriend; finally graduated from college
Brian: resident manyak, annoying at times but generally harmless
Jimmy: clueless. 'nuff said
Fe: Jimmy's girlfriend
Jay: activist-turned-teacher
Harry: just plain creepy

In this book, find out:
  • what happens when Dana, Glen's ex-girlfriend and an original member of the barkada, returns from Europe
  • what happens during a typical day for Glen and Chompy
  • what happens in Tokyo when the Beerkada is sent to the Asian Cartoon Exhibit in Japan
Longtime fans of Beerkada will not be disappointed by this installment. On that note, let's proceed to the next Beerkada book.

"Go Beerkada: The Rise of the Jhologs" is the 10th book in the Beerkada series, and is the first part of a two-book adventure.
Fans who are used to the usual drawing style of Beerkada may be in for a shock. This book is done manga-style. Of course, this new style may draw in some new readers. Sam, for one, said that if the comic strip was done in this style, he would consider reading it.
This graphic novel of sorts starts with Harry recruiting an army of jhologs after a disastrous encounter with the university student council. Enter the Beerkada who gets transformed into a Filipino version of Bioman/Power Rangers. I won't divulge how that comes about, though, since it's a nice little twist in the story.
Take note that this story is set in an alternative universe to the other books and during the pre-Chompy era, prior to Dana and Glen's relationship.

Akibakada: P120
Go Beerkada: Rise of the Jhologs: P110

Honey + Orange + Mocha

Sunday, January 10, 2010
While I was in SM North EDSA this afternoon, I had the chance to sample Starbucks' latest product, Honey Orange Mocha. I had originally planned on buying a caramel frappucino, but, as luck would have it, there were sample cups of Honey Orange Mocha on the counter. Since I'm a fan of trying new things, I decided to give it a shot.

I love drinking coffee but I don't like coffees that are too bitter. In that sense, Honey Orange Mocha is perfect for me. It's not too sweet and not too bitter. The sweetness of the honey and the slight tang of the orange doesn't overpower the taste of the mocha. I would definitely order this again.

Sherlock Holmes, As I Live and Breathe

Friday, January 8, 2010
Yesterday, for the first time this year, I was not able to blog. I had a good excuse, though. Yesterday was my birthday, and Sam and I were at Robinsons Movieworld Galleria Cinema 5, watching the advanced screening of Sherlock Holmes. The previews started at 8 p.m., after a quick game c/o of Max Restaurant. The movie itself started at around 8:20 or so. Without going into too much detail, so as not to spoil it for anyone else, I can say that the movie was very entertaining. The actors truly brought their characters to life. Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes, reminded me at times of Dr. Gregory House of House fame. Of course, House is in part based on Sherlock Holmes, as evidenced by their ability to draw accurate conclusions from seemingly mundane details, antisocial tendencies, and even the addiction to drugs (cocaine for Holmes and Vicodin for House). Jude Law, as Dr. Watson, had his share of witty punchlines which he delivered with impeccable timing.
The fight scenes were interesting, to say the least. Generally, I prefer martial arts movies over western action movies because I find gun battles to be too boring. Some of the fight scenes in Sherlock Holmes changed quickly from shot to shot, making it feel a bit confusing for me, and a little bit as though I was in the middle of the fight scene. Of course, maybe that was the effect they were going for, in which case, they succeeded.
Overall, the movie lives up to the legend. You won't leave the theater disappointed.
